'Wheel of Fortune' contestant makes 'luckiest guess of a lifetime' - TODAY.com

Blog 08

Although this article is a fairly dry and boring piece, I absolutely love it. It is a PERFECT example of Media Flack. All 5 filters have been applied to the release and writing on this article. Wheel of Fortune, one the oldest and most memorable of game-show type TV shows has a contestant who makes a “lucky guess” and Sony had to ask him if he had any devices on him that contributed to the correct answer. This article being published while a very high tension situation continues in the Ukraine and G7 meetings are taking place.

Campaign seeks to remove 'for boys' and 'for girls' from books

Blog 07

A campaign in the United Kingdom seeks to pressure publishers to stop titling and labeling children’s books as being “for boys” or “for girls”. This is a perfect example of the controlling group also known as the Fourth Estate. Because of the decisions made in the process of manufacturing and labeling of books, it influences decisions made by consumers which ultimately lead to perceptions and perspectives taken that may be in the interests of the Fourth Estate put into society. I am completely neutral with the decision to remove ‘for girls’ and ‘for boys’. What makes the transition to this idea harder is the vertical integration and monopoly of companies/publishers.

Watch this guy eat every Burger King burger in one sitting, and survive

Blog 06

Today, food and water is available wherever, and whenever. The availability has gone beyond mere necessity to feed oneself and nutritional reasons. In today’s consumer culture, excess and waste is what follows from food chains at every street corner. With the progression and widespread available technology, the idea of excess is promoted. In this video, The food chain retailer Burger King first promoted the “challenge” of being King enough to eat one of every burger they sell, clearly an act that goes beyond eating to fill your stomach and into entertainment. So in this video, that challenge is accepted and I wonder whether or not Burger King, without the technology and instantaneous sharing, would have posed such a question to its consumers. I think the idea of this video gets back to the technological determinism, whether we shape ourselves through technology, or if technology shapes us.

Watch: Lion cubs outdoors with dad for first time

Blog 05

Who doesn’t love a big cat. Vicious? Nah. Game? Never! Life like any other that should be respected? 100%! I chose to speak about this video today because, although not much happens in it, it gives a great perspective on the medium of the internet. This video has close to 1.5 millions views and things of this nature, cats and other animals, are big viral videos. It allows the world, no matter where you live, to experience and view animals that, depending on your geography, you may never know have existed (given the exception of local Zoos). In that, the internet can be a place to convey ideas of any nature and rally some sort of unifying emotional, or mental response. It really is a public sphere that has no boundaries and services many niches.

NHL signs 12-year TV, Internet deal with Rogers; CBC keeps ‘Hockey Night in Canada’ | Toronto Star

Blog 04

Recently, Rogers bought CBC’s, Hockey Night in Canada. I believe this is an important topic for Canadians to discuss as it impacts Canadians personally, and as a national identity greatly. Although Rogers is a Canadian company, they do not share the same interests as Canadians, or CBC. Hockey Night in Canada is a long standing piece of Canada’s Heritage both as a sport, and as a piece of our Canadian culture and identity. Hockey Night in Canada will still be played on CBC, but no longer exclusively. Because of Rogers ownership, it will now be shown on many different channels. This is a problem because rather than nationally coming together on a public, long-standing Canadian CBC, the Canadian audience will be segmented viewing it on private, Canadian and American channels. I’m a New Jersey Devils fan and still believe in things like keeping the Leafs, Hockey Night in Canada, and most importantly the CBC, specifically for Canada’s identity and long-standing tradition.

Renzi asked to form Italy government

Blog 03

This is a perfect example of just how closely tied society, culture, media and politics are. In Europe, the economy is hurting real bad; as said in this article, this is a ” 41% rate of unemployment among 15-24 year-olds and an overall rate of 12.7% “. It is an example of the fourth estate, as well as the Government-Media relationship. Its as if this article, obviously from a press release of the Italian Government, is meant to bring about hope, change and a sense of confidence towards the Italian Government from its people that things are in the process of getting better; that they recognize current conditions and are moving towards a solution.

Wonderful Pistachios: Stephen Colbert | Ads of the World™

Blog 02

This ad, (orignally posted in adsoftheworld.com, but video wouldn’t play on paper.li) was viewed an aired on the highest ranked watched live-aired program in America, if not North America. Ads are a perfect example, a 30-second time-capsule, of our society. The art direction, writing style, and even cloths and product, reflect our current society as well as allows all of us to share in and understand the current society and culture we live in. This over the top, exaggerated humor was coined first by Old Spice, and has been coming up more and more ever since its success. This form of media though, especially the context of how it is aired into your household TV, is a threat from foreign media. Us Canadians, are being advertised to, by, through, and from Americans.

Gay-rights groups will avoid Olympics -- and spread message via social media

Blog 01

Sochi. Its been making big news for the last couple weeks, respectfully. I find the relationship between a very old debate on gays and lesbians, the Olympics, and the media, very interesting. Because the protestors safety is a priority and not guaranteed within Russia, “the fight” will take place in the digital space. I find this interesting because you can still fight, and make change for the same cause, the way other activists did decades ago over other issues of inequality, but within the digital space, the voice is much larger, more harmonious, and obviously, more connected. It gives a chance beyond traditional media such a print and radio, for a normal person who may not work within media, to take part in the movement of change. It is always a perfect example of space bias and the feeling that Russia is much closer than it actually is because of sharing and viewing information instantaneously.

The use of both old/new posters to create the single, continuous symbol from each movie in TRON is a smart idea. I think it is also executed very nicely. Great use of space.

I understand the message, though it could be stronger. But that aside, I love the illustrative style and I think it works very well with the message and feel.

The concept is very good, rengering style I enjoy, though I think it maybe could have been structured/organized better to communicate the idea easier and faster.
